Since leaving Churcher’s in 67 we had all, one way or another, remained friends - little short of a miracle considering the extent of the ensuing diaspora, and the fact that the first 30 years of it happened before the easy global communications that the internet has brought.

Slowly we all gravitated back to the area after our various life adventures, and eight years ago first two, shortly followed by a third, then fourth, and fifth, began to meet regularly for a six or seven mile walk and, crucially, a pub lunch. We couldn’t but be inspired by Churcher’s 300th anniversary to plan one of our rambles to finish at the Fox & Hounds in Funtington, near Chichester, and to take the opportunity to visit Richard Churcher’s tomb in the delightful, pig-fringed churchyard of St Mary’s. We decided against disturbing the bucolic idyll with a lusty singing of the school song - which is after all, like us, but a footnote to the college’s history.

Pictured are Roger Meadows, David Chapman, and Nigel Wood - group founder with Rob Brown, who is sadly absent from the photo. Kevan Pegley took the photo. We are occasionally joined by Nick Hillyard during his annual visits from Australia.
